Studio Urban Poetics was recently recognized as a finalist in a competition to design a community center in Kodidoddi, Andhra Pradesh. Our approach centered on creating an affordable, sustainable structure that resonates with the local context and traditions.

The design integrates locally understood construction techniques to develop a simple and water-efficient system that is easy to adapt. At the core of the project is a multifunctional space that offers seamless access to the maidhan, enabling activities to extend into the open.

In addition to the central space, the design includes key community facilities such as an Anganwadi for children, a medical space, administrative offices, and support areas, all thoughtfully arranged along a verandah corridor. This corridor surrounds a multifunctional courtyard, providing a cohesive and versatile environment.

A significant feature of the design is the entry plaza, which includes a pavilion intended to showcase and celebrate the community’s rich tradition of art and craft. The building was also designed to ensure comfortable internal temperatures, taking into account the region’s hot climate and embracing a practical, sustainable approach.

Contributing to this community-focused project has been a rewarding experience for us, reflecting our commitment to designing spaces that are both functional and meaningful.
