Facelift

Location Bangalore

Typology Institution

Size

This design intervention at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, began with a simple need: creating seamless access to an auditorium located on the third floor of the existing IAP (Indian Institute of Applied Physics) building. The new staircase was intended to serve students, professors, and visitors from across departments—providing direct access without disrupting the functioning of the existing structure.

Positioned in a corner of the site, the geometry naturally took the form of a triangle. One face aligns with the IAP building, while the other two open out toward the campus, framing views and allowing natural light to filter through. This triangular form was both a spatial solution and an architectural statement.

To give the staircase a strong identity within the academic landscape, we chose a bold red for the enclosing walls—making the structure stand out as a clear and purposeful addition, while also adding vibrancy to the campus environment.

Multiple landings were introduced to ease the climb, turning each pause into a chance for interaction. The triangular corners created along the way offer small, informal spaces to gather, rest, or exchange ideas—a quiet nod to the culture of conversation and collaboration that defines the campus spirit.
